CPR Continuous Chest Compressions Improves CPR Highlands Ranch dentistry

Continuous Compressions Improves CPR

According to a new study when by-standers perform continuous chest compression without mouth-to-mouth breathing the chance of surviving a cardiac arrest outside the hospital was found to be twice as  high compared to when bystanders performed standard CPR (with rescue breathing). Highlands Ranch dentist Dr. James DeLapp has been a CPR instructor for over 25 years and instructs dental offices in its use. His dental office serves the Greater Denver area including Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Centennial, Parker, Ken Caryl, Aurora, and Parker Colorado.

Who completed this study?

This study was conducted by the Resuscitation Research Group and the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center and the SHARE Program a the Arizona Department of Health Services. It should be emphasised that at the time of this writing it is not the protocol advocated by the American Heart Association.  The key in this study "may" be the term by-standers who are only marginally trained in ventillation.

Early defibrillation may be the key to survival

Most other studies indicate that early defibrillation increases you chances of survival if you have cardiac arrest.  Many by-standers are more comfortable just doing chest compressions rather than giving rescue breaths.  Calling 911 obviously is one the the keys to survival for the adult cardiac arrest patient.

Highlands Ranch Dentist a CPR Instructor

Teaching CPR on a readily frequent basis prepares Dr. James DeLapp to deal with emergencies both in and out of the dental office. Dentistry does involve the use of certain drugs and stressful situation that knowledge of CPR is essential. Our Highlands Ranch dentist has many different ways of reducing stress of dental procedures.

Nitrous oxide is used to reduce the stress of Dental appointments

The use of nitrous oxide helps to reduce the stress of dental  appointments.  If fact a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen is used the the treatment of heart attack victims to increase oxygenation and reduce pain.

Dental Cleanings by our Highlands Ranch Dentist (303) 694-9740

Routine Dental Cleanings

Preventive care is the hallmark of modern dental thinking. If you can prevent or delay the start of dental disease the chances of keeping your teeth a life-time increases dramatically. Dental cleanings or prophylaxis can reduce the accumulation of plaque and calculus which contributes to both dental cavities (decay) and gum disease (periodontal disease). Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide preventive dental services to their patients in the Denver, Lone Tree, Parker, Castle Pines, Castle Rock, and Highlands Ranch areas of Colorado.

Time and life fly's by

A patient of our Highlands Ranch dentist came in over a year late for his preventive dental appointment i.e. to get his teeth cleaned. He had not realized that it had been so long. So many things had come up in his life that seeing the dentist was always something he would get arranged next month. Well as can happen a month later turned into "months" later which turned into a year+ later.

Dental Plaque Turns to Calculus

In time dental plaque is bathed in saliva which is rich in calcium. The plaque becomes mineralized and forms tartar or calculus. The calculus is very adherent to the tooth and in most cases can only be removed by a hygienist or dentist. The plaque and calculus have abundant bacteria in their matrix and it is this bacteria that causes dental disease including cavities and gum disease. Removing it becomes a priority!

This is a "before" an after photograph of our Highlands Ranch dental patients calculus
This image show the calculus on the cheek side of the tooth. The parotid gland located on the cheek side of the tooth flows calcium rich saliva which will mineralized the dental plaque. This was removed by our Highlands Ranch hygienist with a dental cavitron (an ultrasonic dental scaler). This was followed by by dental scalers to remove and smooth the tooth. The entire mouth was treated with fluoride varnish to "reduce" the risk of cavities developing.

The "after" photograph of removal of dental calculus or tartar

This is a same day photograph of tartar or calculus removal. The tartar was the "yellowish" deposit on the above photograph

Delta Dental Highlands Ranch

Delta Dental Highlands Ranch

Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp offer accept Delta Dental Premiere plan in their office. There are many product line that Delta Dental or any other insurance company might offer so you should take the time to check out which plan you have coverage with. The differences in reimbursement can be substantial or no coverage what-so-ever (EPO)!

to view our dental office video click the following link Dentist Highlands Ranch

We are a Delta Dental Premiere Provider

Our office participates only in the "Premiere Plan". If you have the Exclusive Provider Option or "EPO"plan you will have no coverage what so ever in our Highlands Ranch dental office. The next tier is the "PPO" plan.; In this plan we are considered a "non-paneled" Delta provider and they pay according to the PPO schedule. This means your out of pocket expenses are "some' more but you can still use your insurance in our office. The Delta Dental Premier Plan you get the best coverage available in our office.

Check with your benefits officer for the "type" of Delta plan

We revive calls from prospective patients asking "if" we are a Delta Provider. As you can see from the above the question is not so cut and dry. The answer is... we are on the Premiere plan and definitely not on the EPO plan. All these three letter acronyms are confusing and we try so hard to help you understand your individual coverage. As in all insurance... look to see if your plan meets your needs and you have the ability to use if where you wish. If you are able to upgrade you coverage there may be certain seasons when this is allowed. Again... check with your benefits officer.

Sensitive teeth Highlands Ranch

There can be many reasons why teeth are sensitive? Obviously, decay on the tooth can be one very good reason. Most frequently in our Highlands Ranch dental office it is dentin sensitivity from gum recession. Our Highlands Ranch dentists treat root sensitivity frequently and for many... even most of patients it is quite effective. For a minority of patients some "other" type of treatment may be necessary. Dr. James and Candace DeLapp treat patients in the Highlands Ranch area as well as Denver, Greenwood Village, Centennial, Castle Pines, Lone Tree, and Parker Colorado.

How does tooth sensitivity start?

Tooth sensitivity starts in early adulthood usually because of gum recession and the loss of cementum covering the dentin of the root surface of the tooth. Dentin tubules (little channels) provide a path to the pulp where the nerve of the tooth is located. Cold or other stimuli travel down these tubules and stimulate the nerve of the tooth causing tooth sensitivity.

How is tooth sensitivity treated?

Dentin sensitivity is treated by applying substances such as potassium ions which depolarizes the nerve. If the nerve is depolarized the need does not react to the stimuli. Another method is by applying materials which seal the outside of the dentin tubules and block off the channels to the nerve. Another method is applying solutions of calcium and phosphate salts to the teeth to reduce sensitivity.

Over the counter teeth sensitivity tooth pastes

For the most part over-the-counter toothpastes solve the problem of sensitive teeth. These tooth pastes will not solve the problems if the sensitivity is due to cavities and seeing your Highlands Ranch dentist for a diagnosis is a must. Professionally applied solutions may be the next best option followed by a dental filling. Either way... you should make an appointment to see what is going on

US Dental Labs Dentist Highlands Ranch

US Dental Labs Dentist Highlands Ranch

There was an article in a dental publication that discussed foreign dental labs (China). In order to keep cost low "some" dentists are having dental crowns made in China (e.g.). Our Highlands Ranch dentist 'only" uses dental laboratories in the United States .

Cost and quality Dentist Highlands Ranch

Low cost and high quality are an uncommon occurrence. Most individual believe that the higher cost generally means (not always) higher quality. As an example the salary of Chinese dental lab tech is $4.00 an hour but their currency is only worth 15% of the US dollar. This means that these Chinese dental tech are working for 60 cents and hour. They are frequently provide food and shelter which not indicated in their per hour rate. Can they produce a product superior to a US technician?

Foreign dental labs crowns with high lead levels

There were reports of "certain" foreign dental labs whose dental crowns had high lead levels. Bottom line is this is not acceptable. Our Highlands Ranch dentist do not use foreign dental labs

High quality US Dental Labs Dentist Highlands Ranch

Our Highlands Ranch dentist use Las Vegas Esthetics dental lab in Las Vegas Nevada. They are a highly qualified dental lab that produces very esthetic dental crowns, bridges and veneers. The cost of this lab is substantially higher than any local dental laboratory but their work is worth it.

Additional dental cleanings Dentist Highlands Ranch

Additional dental cleaning Dentist Highlands Ranch

Typically dental insurance companies only reimburse patients for two cleaning per year and... "if" they have some type of gum disease that has been treated with deep cleanings ( root plaining). Our Highlands Ranch dentist feel it is a shame to let this happen in order to be reimbursed.

More than two dental cleaning per year Dentist Highlands Ranch

Unfortunately, you may need to have more than two dental cleanings per year to stay ahead of gum disease. Not everyone is at the same risk for gum disease and more frequent dental cleaning can reduce (not eliminate) this risk. Our Highlands Ranch dentists have found some patient develop dental calculus in what seems to be overnight. Other patient can take a full 6-months and get very little deposits. As you have heard before... life is not fair... and ...it is what it is.

Home care obviously is the key to your dental health Dentist Highlands Ranch

Dental care consisting of brushing, flossing, fluoride and diet control are the best preventive measures you can take. Diet control revolves around reducing the simple sugars you intake daily. This includes candy and sodas.

Add "Listerine" to your home care regimen

Adding Listerine to your home care regimens can significantly improve your overall dental health. Listerine work effectively to reduce the bacterial count in your mouth. Reducing the levels of bacterial that causes gum disease (periodontal disease) and cavities improves your overall dental health.

Seating a dental crown Dentist Highlands Ranch

Seating a dental crown Dentist Highlands Ranch

Seating a dental crown is a common procedure in dentistry. Highlands Ranch dentist Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace Delapp review the common elements in crown seating. As background a dental crown is placed on a tooth that has been damaged by decay, older failing dental fillings or tooth fracture etc. Many dental crowns are cemented on and some are bonded on. We will review the cemented variety.

if you would like to view our Highlands Ranch dentists dental practice video click the following link Dentist Highlands Ranch

The dental temporary is critical Dentist Highlands Ranch
The dental temporary our Highlands Ranch dentist places on your tooth while it is being fabricated in the dental laboratory is critical to this step. The dental temporary holds the width space as well as it holds the vertical space in not allowing the tooth to super-erupt (move down). The temporary is cemented with ...yes... temporary cement. Temporary cement is suppose to be weak and should be easy to remove( sometimes it is not!).

The porcelain or gold dental crown is tried in and fitted Dentist Highlands Ranch

The porcelain crown it fitted onto the tooth and our Highlands Ranch and Denver Dentists or staff make minor adjustments. These adjustments can be for the width or contact as well as the height or the bite. Once it appears to fit well on the tooth we take a dental radiograph to verify the fit "if" needed.

The crown is cemented onto the tooth Dentist Highlands Ranch
After the above steps the tooth is dried and the crown is cemented on. The cement is allowed to initially set and removed from the margins of the tooth. The bite is re-verified and the patient dismissed.

Be careful... the dental cement is still setting Dentist Highlands Ranch

In most cases... it takes "awhile" for the cement to set. We tell our Highlands Ranch and Denver Dental patients to chew on the other side for the first 24 hours. Disrupting the cement before it finally sets can put fractures in the cement and the crown may become dislodged and fall off. Do not despair... in a vast majority of cases it can be re cemented back on (sometimes it can't).

Dentist Highlands Ranch teeth movement post orthodontics

Dentist Highlands Ranch post orthodontic movement

Orthodontic retainers are an integral part of the overall orthodontic treatment. Our Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp want to stress the life-long use of dental retainers. Teeth post orthodontia still want to move and one term is mesial migration of the teeth in general. What this means is ... as we age our teeth want to move forward in our mouth. This forward movement causes crowding especially in the lower anterior teeth. An orthodontic retainer can "reduce" this movement in "most" cases. Dr's DeLapp see patients from the Lone Tree, Parker, Castle Pines, Highlands Ranch, Greenwood and Denver area.

Retainers "sometimes" do not stabilized the teeth Dentist Highlands Ranch

Yes... sometimes the retainer is not enough to prevent movement and relapse of the orthodontic case. There are other potential solutions as far as retention is concerned and include but are not limited to:
  • Different type of retainer
  • Gingival fiber release
  • Bonded lingual arch wire
Highlands Ranch dentist may elect to fabricate a different type of dental orthodontic retainer. The choice of retainer depends upon the issue we are trying to resolve. Gingival fiber release is less common than it was years ago. The "idea" is gingival fibers "may" act like rubber bands pulling the teeth back into their original position. A bonded lingual arch wire is a relatively common approach to lower arch stabilization. A small diameter arch wire is bonded to the inner surface of the teeth and stabilizes the arch

One-hour teeth whitening is effective Dentist Highlands Ranch

Our Highlands Ranch dentist have found one hour teeth whitening to be effective for most patients. It uses a much stronger solution of carbamide peroxide to whiten teeth. A light accelerates the process. Base colors that work well are teeth that have a yellow hue

Combined teeth whitening treatment Dentist Highlands Ranch

Our Highlands Ranch dentists have use a combined technique of one hour teeth whitening with custom made take home whitening trays. This is much more effective than either technique used by itself.

Matching teeth with white dental fillings Dentist Highlands Ranch

Color challenges on front teeth Dentist Highlands Ranch

Matching the color of your front teeth at first appears to be no big issue. You may think... how may colors of white could there be? Our Highlands Ranch dentist can tell you from experience the answer is many. Not only is color an issue but also the texture and value (brightness) of the tooth comes into play. Our Highlands Ranch and Denver dentist work to make the color of your front tooth as close as we can by using the above listed principles.

to view our Highlands Ranch dentist dental practice video click the following link
Dentist Highlands Ranch

Color of teeth Dentist Highlands Ranch

Color of teeth are white and... either yellow, gray, or brown based. Typical dental shade guides divide the tooth colors into these basic group. The difficulty comes when your tooth is a combination of the above colors. Extended range shade guides help with this problem but is only one of the many answers.

Value of brightness of the teeth

The value or brightness of a tooth "may" be more important that the overall color selection of a tooth. Picking a high value restorative material on a tooth with low value looks like you have placed a Chiclets next to your tooth. Lowering or raising the value on a dental restoration might be the most effective solution to matching your filling to your tooth.
Italic
Opacity of translucency of teeth

Our Highlands Ranch dentist feels the most misunderstood element in dental filling is the translucency of the tooth. Translucency make light pass through the tooth and the overall effect is to decrease value or brightness of the tooth. Some dental filling manufactures list the translucent shades as enamel shades. This can result in placing a low value translucent filling on a tooth thinking it is replacing the enamel when the tooth has no translucency. The net result of this is a gray looking dental filling

Consider whitening your teeth before white dental fillings

As we age our teeth pick up stains that teeth whitening can correct. Sometimes we need to whiten because the color of our teeth are outside the colors provided by dental manufacturers. Sometimes the only solution to color issues are dental veneers which will be discussed later. Bottom line is... consider bleaching your teeth first.

Dentist Highlands Ranch white dental fillings (303) 694-9740

Dentist Highlands Ranch White Dental Fillings

White dental fillings have over the years become the standard of care in dentistry. Amalgam or mercury and silver fillings were popular in the Civil War and since that time there has been much improvement in the technology of dental restorative materials. Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide general dentistry as well as Denver dental implant dentistry to patients in Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Parker, Ken Caryl and Greenwood Village Colorado.

Minimally Invasive dentistry Dentist Highlands Ranch

White dental filling material allows us to remove very little tooth structure. Silver amalgam restorations need certain depths and widths in order to be effective. This has caused dentists to prepare the tooth to meet the needs of restorative materials. Today's restorative material allows us to bond white dental filling material on the tooth ...conserving much more tooth structure.

Besides... white dental fillings look better

Our Highlands Ranch dentists do not discount the looks of the new dental material. Silver amalgam restorations were a not too esthetic material when they were placed (silver) and in time ...look pretty ugly (black). Looking at old movies we can see dental work of the stars which did not look too appealing.

Feel free to contact our Highlands Ranch dental office if you wish to modernize your smile by removing "old" amalgam restorations and upgrading to the newer composite dental restorations.

Cost of dental implants Highlands Ranch dentist

Cost of dental implants Highlands Ranch

Our Highlands Ranch dentists receive call on the costs of dental implants on what seems to be on a daily basis. The difficulty in answering these prospective patients question is... how many dental implants are needed and... the location of the implants in your mouth. These factors can vary from patient to patient. The bottom line is... we need to see you in order to even give you "even" a ball- park estimate. Frequently, we need to collect data (x-rays and models) in order to determine costs. Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide general and dental implant services for their patients in the Denver, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Parker, Centennial, Ken Caryl and Greenwood Village area of Colorado.

Estimated costs of dental implants Highlands Ranch Colorado circa 2009

Dental implants can cost more than the following or sometimes less. What is considered average for one patient is not average for another. If you are looking to replace a single tooth with an implant costs are generally less than $5,000.00 "per" tooth. The variables that can affect the total cost include but are not limited to:
  • An existing tooth is present?
  • I.V. sedation needed?
  • How much bone is there both quality and quantity
  • In the maxillary sinus in the area?
  • Is a nerve (inferior alveolar e.g.) in the area?
  • Do you have any health issues
  • Do you smoke?
  • Clenching and grinding issue
  • Number of remaining teeth
  • Will the implants support multiple teeth?
  • Will the implant "help" retain a denture?
In complex dental implants cases you can spend as much as on a luxury car or a condo. The bottom line that control costs is the number of implants and what will the dental implants support.

Dentist Highlands Ranch

Our Highlands Ranch dentist offers general dental services for patients in Denver Metro area. For many of our patients decay or cavities have become less of a problems and either gum disease or occlusal disease becomes the issue.

Gum disease Highlands Ranch dentist
Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in the adult population. Our Highlands Ranch dentist want to catch gum disease in its earliest stages. This involves evaluating the health of your gums by several objective means.

Dental periodontal probe

The dental periodontal probe measures the length of the pocket of gum tissue around your tooth. The normal... healthy pocket measures 1-3 mm. A measurement of 4mm indicates (for the most part) early gum problems and 5 and above "can" mean significant problems.

Bleeding on probing

Bleeding with the periodontal probe or bleeding with brushing or flossing is generally considered an indicator of active gum disease. In our Highlands Ranch dentists opinion this is more significant than depth of probing (with exceptions noted).

Mobility of the tooth
Mobility of the tooth may be one of the greatest predictor of tooth health. Mobility is classified as 1,2, and 3. Class 3 mobility is where there is mobility of the tooth in lateral and vertical directions. The prognosis of a tooth with class 3 mobility is generally considered poor.

Please feel free to contact our Highlands Ranch dentist and schedule an appointment today at (303) 694-9740.

Highlands Ranch dentist "laser' tooth whitening (303) 694-9740

A laser is "not" used to whiten teeth

Over they years there has been some sloppy terminology in regards to whiteing. To describe the light used some coined the term laser whitening. There for the first things to review on Laser tooth whitening is the light is NOT a laser. This light has a specific very bright wave lengths but technically not a laser. Make no mistake the light like a laser emits wavelengths of light that can damage your eyes so use protective eye wear when near either. Highlands Ranch dentist Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide cosmetic dental services for their patients in Denver, Castle Pines, Lone Tree, Centennial, Parker, Greenwood Village, and Centennial Colorado.

How does staining begins

Most of us begin life with white teeth and over time diet, drink, smoking (etc). stain and discolor our teeth. In time our teeth can appear yellow...gray... or brown in color.

The many techniques to bleach your teeth

There are several techniques used to bleach teeth. In reality... most are effective to varying degrees. The bottom line to bleaching is ... "bleach time on tooth". The more concentrated the solution... the less time needed to be on the tooth. Low concentrations found in over- the- counter products need much more time. In our Highlands Ranch dentist opinion bleaching toothpastes are for the most part ineffective. The techniques use include but are not limited to

  • One hour -two hour bleaching technique (Luma etc.)
  • Custom dental tray fabricated in our office-
  • Universal fit dental trays
  • Whitening strips over -the -counter

Combined tooth whitening techniques

Our Highlands Ranch dentist has found in difficult to whiten teeth that several techniques may need to be combined to whiten your teeth. Colors like gray or tetracycline staining can be very difficult to whiten to any great degree. Dental veneers may be the only effective solution

Our Highlands Ranch dentist have helped hundreds of patients achieve a white smile everyone desires. Power whitening with Luma is a quick affordable and reliable technique.

Having not seen the patient yet several things came to mind. It is very unfortunate that this patient has let their oral health deteriorate to the point of needing dentures. When we do have the opportunity to evaluate them... dentures may indeed be the only choice. There are some issues that I would like everyone who is in this situation or approaching this level of destruction to know in the following article. Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide general dental services to their patients in the Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Parker, Ken Caryl, Greenwood Village, Centennial and Denver Colorado area.

A lower denture never fits

For many years our Highlands Ranch dentists have discussed with their patients that a lower denture never fits. The ridge is horseshoe shaped... thin... and resorbs 3X faster than the upper ridge. In addition the tongue constantly dislodges it. Our Highlands Ranch dentists feel that an upper denture for the most part fits O.K. ( didn't say great) but for most patients acceptable.

The bone on the lower melts away

Since the bone on the mandible resorbs 3X faster than the upper what there is to saddle to melts away in time. This is why it is a crime for a young patient to have their teeth extracted at an early age. In fact, over time, the bone can be so thin that the mandible fractures under load. Keeping teeth or dental implants can help preserved the bone.

Consider dental implants

One of the many benefits of dental implants is making that lower denture fit to some degree "and"... helping preserve the bone in the mandible. Implants are not inexpensive but their help in preserving bone cannot be measured especially in anyone under 30 years olds.
