New year beginning new dental benefits Highlands Ranch Dentists

Our Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp will be starting 2010 with great anticipation.  For our Highlands Ranch dental patients, a new year means new dental service benefits. Many of our patients have made "New Years Resolutions" to get their dental health in order.

Dental fillings choices in Highlands Ranch

Materials used to create a dental filling is quite varied. "old" school" dentistry involves amalgam or silver dental fillings.  The amalgam dental filling is a combination of silver and mercury. It has been used in dentistry since the Civil War.  Newer Composite restorations have what our Highlands Ranch dentist believe are benefits over amalgam dental fillings.  These advantages include but are not limited to:
  • Less natural tooth structure is removed in order to place the dental filling
  • The filling is bonded to the tooth
  • Our opinion is this filling is less sensitive post operatively compared to an amalgam restoration
  • It does not expand or corrode like an amalgam filling
  • It looks more like natural tooth structure
One disadvantage of white dental fillings is they cost more to produce. "some" dental insurance companies downgrade the white dental filling to the cost of the older amalgam type fillings. The key is... the choice is yours.  If cost is your biggest concern certainly an amalgam filling is appropriate. You should feel free to upgrade to a white dental filling.

Cosmetic Dentistry in Highlands Ranch

Cosmetic dentistry can be something as simple as teeth bleaching and something as complex as surgical orthodontics.  Dental veneers is a procedure that works well with many different cosmetic challenges and can help you get the smile you have always wanted. The key to changing your smile is the diagnosis and planning of your case. This involves a photographic evaluation of your smile and in most cases a diagnostic wax-up to  further evaluate your smile. Please feel free to call our Highlands Ranch  and Lone Tree dentists and schedule an initial no charge consultation to see if  cosmetic dentistry will give you the smile you have always wanted.

Color of teeth Dentist Highlands Ranch

Color of teeth are white and... either yellow, gray, or brown based. Typical dental shade guides divide the tooth colors into these basic group. The difficulty comes when your tooth is a combination of the above colors. Extended range shade guides help with this problem but is only one of the many answers.

Value of brightness of the teeth

The value or brightness of a tooth "may" be more important that the overall color selection of a tooth. Picking a high value restorative material on a tooth with low value looks like you have placed a Chiclets next to your tooth. Lowering or raising the value on a dental restoration might be the most effective solution to matching your filling to your tooth.

Opacity of translucency of teeth

Our Highlands Ranch dentist feels the most misunderstood element in dental filling is the translucency of the tooth. Translucency make light pass through the tooth and the overall effect is to decrease value or brightness of the tooth. Some dental filling manufactures list the translucent shades as enamel shades. This can result in placing a low value translucent filling on a tooth thinking it is replacing the enamel when the tooth has no translucency. The net result of this is a gray looking dental filling

Consider whitening your teeth before white dental fillings

As we age our teeth pick up stains that teeth whitening can correct. Sometimes we need to whiten because the color of our teeth are outside the colors provided by dental manufacturers. Sometimes the only solution to color issues are dental veneers which will be discussed later. Bottom line is... consider bleaching your teeth first.
