Denture Repair Highlands Ranch Dentists

Denture Repair in Highlands Ranch

Denture repair for the most part is a stop gap procedures when a denture breaks. Our Highlands Ranch dentists repaired an upper denture that is currently being used in the short term until a metal framework partial denture can be fabricated. Our Denver area dental practice serves the Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Centennial, Greenwood Village,Parker, Ken Caryl, and Englewood areas of Colorado.

"Older" denture plastic does not repair well

Older denture plastic does not bond well to new acrylic used to repair a denture. Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. Sarah Parsons and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp used new acrylic and "try" to get some type of bonding with the older acrylic or plastic.  In addition, we placed orthodontic wire in an "attempt" to strengthen the repair. The goal in this situation is to "buy" time until a more definitive or durable (and more expensive) solution can be found  In this case the patient is contemplating dental implants.  Dental implants work well in many but not all cases.  The "key" for dental implants is the amount and quality of bone at an implant site.

Practicing what they teach

Both Dr. DeLapp and Parsons teach at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Candace DeLapp has taught Removable Prostodontics which includes dentures and partial dentures.  At this time both are teaching in the operative dentistry course which includes dental fillings.

Sensitive teeth Highlands Ranch

There can be many reasons why teeth are sensitive? Obviously, decay on the tooth can be one very good reason. Most frequently in our Highlands Ranch dental office it is dentin sensitivity from gum recession. Our Highlands Ranch dentists treat root sensitivity frequently and for many... even most of patients it is quite effective. For a minority of patients some "other" type of treatment may be necessary. Dr. James and Candace DeLapp treat patients in the Highlands Ranch area as well as Denver, Greenwood Village, Centennial, Castle Pines, Lone Tree, and Parker Colorado.

How does tooth sensitivity start?

Tooth sensitivity starts in early adulthood usually because of gum recession and the loss of cementum covering the dentin of the root surface of the tooth. Dentin tubules (little channels) provide a path to the pulp where the nerve of the tooth is located. Cold or other stimuli travel down these tubules and stimulate the nerve of the tooth causing tooth sensitivity.

How is tooth sensitivity treated?

Dentin sensitivity is treated by applying substances such as potassium ions which depolarizes the nerve. If the nerve is depolarized the need does not react to the stimuli. Another method is by applying materials which seal the outside of the dentin tubules and block off the channels to the nerve. Another method is applying solutions of calcium and phosphate salts to the teeth to reduce sensitivity.

Over the counter teeth sensitivity tooth pastes

For the most part over-the-counter toothpastes solve the problem of sensitive teeth. These tooth pastes will not solve the problems if the sensitivity is due to cavities and seeing your Highlands Ranch dentist for a diagnosis is a must. Professionally applied solutions may be the next best option followed by a dental filling. Either way... you should make an appointment to see what is going on

Seating a dental crown Dentist Highlands Ranch

Seating a dental crown Dentist Highlands Ranch

Seating a dental crown is a common procedure in dentistry. Highlands Ranch dentist Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace Delapp review the common elements in crown seating. As background a dental crown is placed on a tooth that has been damaged by decay, older failing dental fillings or tooth fracture etc. Many dental crowns are cemented on and some are bonded on. We will review the cemented variety.

The dental temporary is critical Dentist Highlands Ranch
The dental temporary our Highlands Ranch dentist places on your tooth while it is being fabricated in the dental laboratory is critical to this step. The dental temporary holds the width space as well as it holds the vertical space in not allowing the tooth to super-erupt (move down). The temporary is cemented with ...yes... temporary cement. Temporary cement is suppose to be weak and should be easy to remove( sometimes it is not!).

The porcelain or gold dental crown is tried in and fitted Dentist Highlands Ranch

The porcelain crown it fitted onto the tooth and our Highlands Ranch and Denver Dentists or staff make minor adjustments. These adjustments can be for the width or contact as well as the height or the bite. Once it appears to fit well on the tooth we take a dental radiograph to verify the fit "if" needed.

The crown is cemented onto the tooth Dentist Highlands Ranch
After the above steps the tooth is dried and the crown is cemented on. The cement is allowed to initially set and removed from the margins of the tooth. The bite is re-verified and the patient dismissed.

Be careful... the dental cement is still setting Dentist Highlands Ranch

In most cases... it takes "awhile" for the cement to set. We tell our Highlands Ranch and Denver Dental patients to chew on the other side for the first 24 hours. Disrupting the cement before it finally sets can put fractures in the cement and the crown may become dislodged and fall off. Do not despair... in a vast majority of cases it can be re cemented back on (sometimes it can't).

Dentist Highlands Ranch General dentistry (303) 694-9740

Dentist Highlands Ranch

Our Highlands Ranch dentist offers general dental services for patients in Denver Metro area. For many of our patients decay or cavities have become less of a problems and either gum disease or occlusal disease becomes the issue.

Gum disease Highlands Ranch dentist
Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in the adult population. Our Highlands Ranch dentist want to catch gum disease in its earliest stages. This involves evaluating the health of your gums by several objective means.

Dental periodontal probe

The dental periodontal probe measures the length of the pocket of gum tissue around your tooth. The normal... healthy pocket measures 1-3 mm. A measurement of 4mm indicates (for the most part) early gum problems and 5 and above "can" mean significant problems.

Bleeding on probing

Bleeding with the periodontal probe or bleeding with brushing or flossing is generally considered an indicator of active gum disease. In our Highlands Ranch dentists opinion this is more significant than depth of probing (with exceptions noted).

Mobility of the tooth
Mobility of the tooth may be one of the greatest predictor of tooth health. Mobility is classified as 1,2, and 3. Class 3 mobility is where there is mobility of the tooth in lateral and vertical directions. The prognosis of a tooth with class 3 mobility is generally considered poor.

Please feel free to contact our Highlands Ranch dentist and schedule an appointment today at (303) 694-9740.

Complimentary cosmetic dental consultation Highlands Ranch dentist

A complimentary dental consultation provide the following:
  • It provides a no-cost visit to see if you are a candidate for dental veneers or any other cosmetic dental procedure.
  • While not a perfect predictor of treatment potential it can give the cosmetic dentist and patient a rough idea of what "may" be able to be done.
  • It allows you to have your questions answered ahead of time and decide if our office is right for you.
  • Our Highlands Ranch dentist gets an opportunity to evaluate the level of complexity of your case.
  • An "estimate" of costs can be proposed and see if this fits into your budget.
  • You have an opportunity to see if Care Credit financing may help you with your cosmetic dental treatment.
Diagnostic wax-up and full dental exam before proceeding with treatment

Of course a full dental exam... radiographs and treatment plan should be accomplished before starting treatment . With this as a background... diagnostic wax-up of your proposed case can be fabricated prior to starting your case. The diagnostic wax-up gives us the opportunity to work out your case ahead of time to see what is possible. In a sense... it is doing your treatment twice once on plaster models and again when you decide on treatment.

Delaying dentures in the young patient Highlands Ranch Dentist (303) 694-9740

Delaying Dentures in the young patient

The other day our Highlands Ranch dentists recieved a call from a patient under 30 years old wanting to know the cost and procedures for dentures. Having not seen the patient yet several things came to mind. It is very unfortunate that this patient has let their oral health deteriorate to the point of needing dentures. When we do have the opportunity to evaluate them... dentures may indeed be the only choice. There are some issues that I would like everyone who is in this situation or approaching this level of destruction to know in the following article. Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide general dental services to their patients in the Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Parker, Ken Caryl, Greenwood Village, Centennial and Denver Colorado area.

A lower denture never fits

For many years our Highlands Ranch dentists have discussed with their patients that a lower denture never fits. The ridge is horseshoe shaped... thin... and resorbs 3X faster than the upper ridge. In addition the tongue constantly dislodges it. Our Highlands Ranch dentists feel that an upper denture for the most part fits O.K. ( didn't say great) but for most patients acceptable.

The bone on the lower melts away

Since the bone on the mandible resorbs 3X faster than the upper what there is to saddle to melts away in time. This is why it is a crime for a young patient to have their teeth extracted at an early age. In fact, over time, the bone can be so thin that the mandible fractures under load. Keeping teeth or dental implants can help preserved the bone.

Consider dental implants

One of the many benefits of dental implants is making that lower denture fit to some degree "and"... helping preserve the bone in the mandible. Implants are not inexpensive but their help in preserving bone cannot be measured especially in anyone under 30 years olds.

Please feel free to call

Please feel free to contact our Highlands Ranch dentists for an evaluation today. If you can delay loosing your teeth so much the better. You may not be able to keep all your teeth but some teeth is so much better than no teeth. Tooth Sensivity Highalds Ranch Dentist (303) 694-9740

Tooth Sensivity Highlands Ranch Dentist
Our Highlands Ranch dentists, Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp have had several patient report varying degree to teeth sensitivity. These reports have been with no dental treatment and on rare occasions after dental treatment. The question arises is ... what if the cause and... what is the treatment?. Eliminating possibilities is call the differential diagnosis and in the case of a new dental filling, crown or even dental cleaning "most" of these are self limiting and go away with time. Our Highlands Ranch dentists treat patients from Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Parker, Ken Caryl, Greenwood Village and Denver Colorado
The "common cold" in dentistry
Dentin sensitivity has been described my many as the common cold of dentistry and by other as toothbrush disease. Still others believe that clenching and grinding of your teeth contributes to this sensitivity. Is has been described as sharp pain arising from some stimulus such as cold or hot... tactile, osmotic (high sugar content e.g.) or chemical (citric acid in orange juice e.g.). It is a common oral problem and affect almost 60% of patients with peaks around 20 to 40 years old. Most of the time it is associated with the facial (cheek side) of the tooth just above the gum line.
Treatment options for teeth sensitivity
Treatment of teeth sensitivity revolves around treating both the cause and symptom. If the tooth sensitivity is due to clenching and grinding you are wasting your effort in placing desensitizers on the tooth until your treat the underlying cause of the sensitivity. Likewise over aggressive brushing with a hard bristle brush needs to stop before any treatment is to be effective.
Types of medicines or medicament's include products for tubule occlusion, protein precipitation and lower nerves sensitivity. The products in treating this problem range from oxalate, calcium phosphate desentizers, sodium fluoride, glutaraldehyde, stannous fluoride and potassium containing products. The above list is boring but it should be noted that there are "various" ways to treat dentist sensitivity.

Straight teeth without braces Dentist Highlands Ranch (303) 694-9740

Straight teeth without braces Highlands Ranch Dentist

A frequent question asked by our patients to our Highlands Ranch dentist is "I want straight teeth but I don't want braces... can you help?"

The short answer is yes and there are two basic strategies involved. One involves moving your teeth with clear retainers (Invisalign) and the other with dental veneers. It appears from our consultation with patients is they object to the metal banding, brackets and wires from traditional orthodontics. Our Highlands Ranch dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide a variety of dental services to their patients living in Denver, Parker, Castle Pines, Ken Caryl, Greenwood Village, Centennial and Lone Tree Colorado.
Invisalign nearly "invisible" retainers Highlands Ranch dentistry
Invisalign is a series of nearly invisible retainers designed to move your teeth in 0.25 mm or less. In order to aid in these movements and to secure the aligners our Highlands Ranch Invisalign dentist bond tooth colored attachments on your teeth. Invisalign is very useful for less complicated tooth movements. Unfortunately very complex malocclusions may indeed be best treated by traditional orthodontics. The aligners are worn for approximately two weeks at a time. Total aligners can number as few as 10 to 30 or more and depends upon the complexity of your case. Your case may or may not be amenable to Invisalign treatment. To view a more complex case treated with Invisalign, dental veneers and teeth whitening please click on the following link Highlands Ranch Invisalign
Dental Veneers Highlands Ranch Colorado
Porcelain dental veneers as been incorrectly refereed to as instant orthodontics. It is not orthodontics at all but teeth are reshaped and veneers placed over the modified tooth structure. Once again this techniques work well with many but not all malocclusion's. Significant tooth mal-position is best handled by traditional orthodontics. Typically our Highlands Ranch dentist would like to first see if your case can be handled by a diagnostic wax up. This allows us to evaluate your case three dimensionally to see how it will progress. If you would like to see actual case please click on the following link Highlands Ranch Dental Veneers
