Gum disease Highlands Ranch dentist
Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in the adult population. Our Highlands Ranch dentist want to catch gum disease in its earliest stages. This involves evaluating the health of your gums by several objective means.

Dental periodontal probe

The dental periodontal probe measures the length of the pocket of gum tissue around your tooth. The normal... healthy pocket measures 1-3 mm. A measurement of 4mm indicates (for the most part) early gum problems and 5 and above "can" mean significant problems.

Bleeding on probing

Bleeding with the periodontal probe or bleeding with brushing or flossing is generally considered an indicator of active gum disease. In our Highlands Ranch dentists opinion this is more significant than depth of probing (with exceptions noted).

Mobility of the tooth
Mobility of the tooth may be one of the greatest predictor of tooth health. Mobility is classified as 1,2, and 3. Class 3 mobility is where there is mobility of the tooth in lateral and vertical directions. The prognosis of a tooth with class 3 mobility is generally considered poor.
