Dental Disease during pregnancy Highlands Ranch Dentist

Our Highlands Ranch dentists just received from Delta Dental Colorado Foundation that describes their infant oral health public education campaign for 2009. This program has increased awareness of dental disease in expecting mothers from 26% to 69%.

Delta is encouraging dentists to discuss this issue with patients of child bearing age to improve the overall health of the community.

Some facts to consider include but are not limited to

  • Gum disease in mothers may be linked to premature low birth weight in infants

  • Oral infections can lead to the health problems and some of them serious in nature

  • There is a possibility that you can transfer the cavity producing bacteria from your mouth to your infants.

  • Hormones levels in pregnant females can cause gum disease and cavities

  • Dental treatment during pregnancy is safe for most expecting moms.
  • However, as in everything else please check with your OBGYN to make sure in your individual case.
